Scotland
One of the most important aspects of any expedition is to ensure that the personnel taking part are capable of achieving the objective. One of the best ways to assess this is to run a series of training packages at different locations that help not only to reinforce the climbing and mountaineering skills but also help bond the team into an effective team which enables them to trust one another fully in what could be life threatening situations.
The first package will be run from Rothiemurchus Lodge in the Cairngorm mountains, Scotland. This will enable the Training Co-ordinator Nic Arding to see what level the individuals are at and to tailor the training towards the individual with the idea of getting maximum exposure to Scottish winters thus giving them quality mountain days.

Switzerland
The second training package will be run during the Joint Service Alpine meet in the Saas Grund (Valais Alps). Here the training will concentrate on the alpine skills that everyone needs to be fully conversant with. Also this will be an ideal opportunity to test our communications equipment and vital support structure in the UK.
Another important task to be tackled on this portion of the training will be the use and familiarisation of the communication equipment. This will be the ideal opportunity for any minor technical 'glitches' to be ironed out whilst in the relatively safety of the Alps.

Kyrgyzstan
Tien-Shan are one of the largest mountain systems in Asia. It extends about 2000km in the latitudinal direction and is 400 km in width. About 2/3 mountains of the Tien-Shan is located in Kyrgyzstan. The ranges of the Tien-Shan are made of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. The Tien-Shan consists of Northern, Western, Central, Inner, and Eastern Tien-Shan according to its orographic structure. Most of the ranges have typical mountain-glacier "alpine" relief. The ancient highly elevated flat surfaces like those in Tibet are for example on the southern slope of the Terskey Ala-Too or in the Inner Tien-Shan, where they are on the altitude of 4-5 thousand meters.
The climate of Tien-Shan is sharply continental, i.e. hot summers on the foothills & valleys and cold in the Alpine zone. The winters are severe for this latitude with strong temperature fluctuations within a day and a year, cloudless and considerable dryness are characteristic features of this area. There is plenty of solar light, with an average annual duration of solar radiance amounting from 2500 to 2700 hours. The best climbing weather is August and September. Rainfall varies greatly from 200-300 mm to 1600 mm per year. Maximum rainfall is during the first part of summer. The total area of glaciers in Tien-Shan makes up 7300 sq km.
